Welcome to the bite, where we serve you all of the food, drink, and dining news you can handle in one sitting.
This past week the James Beard Awards announced their semifinalists for the 2018 awards season. While New York, Chicago, and LA had their fair share of nominees, it was great to see some talent from right here in the Detroit area.
Leading off the Detroit list is Lisa Ludwinski of Sister Pie. Sister Pie is a scratch bakery which strives to have a positive impact on the community, the economy, and the environment. Check out Sister Pie in Detroit’s West Village. Lisa formerly worked at Milk Bar in NY.
In the Outstanding bar program, Detroit’s’ Standby was nominated with Joe Robinson manning the bar.
Standy by describes itself as a bar with, “all manner of culinary tools” to produce ” highly complex,” and approachable cocktails.
For outstanding service, Zingerman’s Delicatessen from Ann Arbor made their way to the semifinals list.
On the list of Rising Star Chef of the Year, we see Lena Sareini the Pastry Chef of Selden Standard.
Lena is a graduate of Schoolcraft College’s baking and pastry program and has been working in the industry just over six years.
Thomas Lents from Chef’s Table at Detroit Foundation Hotel has made the cut.
The Chef’s Table was recently named best restaurant in Detroit. Chef Lents is an alumnus of The Mansion. Joel Robuchon’s two Michelin star restaurant in Las Vegas.
Last, but certainly not least, Lady of the House has made it to the semifinals under Chef Kate Williams.
This Corktown favorite made the JBA semifinalist list with its focus on local ingredients and whole animal butchery.
In other restaurant news.
Top Chef season ten winner Kristen Kish will be opening a restaurant in Austin later this year.
Her spot, Arlo Grey will be part of The Line ATX hotel in downtown Austin.
The restaurant will reflect her recent world travels as well as, Texas and Gulf influences.
Chef Kish recently released her first cookbook, Kristen Kish Cooking in October of 2017. http://go.magik.ly/ml/9qwl/
Earlier, I said Chef’s Table at Detroit Foundation Hotel was named as the best restaurant in Detroit by the Detroit Free Press.
Well, another notable Detroit publication has their own opinion.
Hour Magazine named Parc in downtown its selection for best restaurant.
Hour magazine not only loves the food but the level of service you do not see in most American restaurants these days.
In late breaking news. The James Beard Foundation has awarded Chef Jose Andres their “Humanitarian of the year award for his work in Puerto Rico and Haiti through his nonprofit organization World Central Kitchen.
Mitchell Davis, Executive Vice President of the James Beard Foundation, stated, “Jose’s work in Puerto Rico and Haiti shows how chefs can use their expertise and unique skills to enact profound change on a global scale. Davis goes on to say, ” He has demonstrated how, at the most difficult times, hot cooked meals provide more than nutrition, they provide dignity. And we couldn’t imagine a more fitting honoree this year as we celebrate how chefs and our industry rise.”
Congratulations Chef Andres. You are the standard Chefs should aspire to be.
